“Lightness, color, desire—and a lot of work.” That was the recipe for the new Lanvin collection, according to Alber Elbaz. The show itself opened with leanly dark ensembles (one jacket sleeveless, another fly-fronted), which immediately felt like a refutation of everything the house’s menswear has come to stand for. The sensation was fleeting, though: Maybe those first outfits were intended as some kind of conceptual break, but once the show took flight in a fast-paced frenzy, the details that flew out of the blur were very much in keeping with the almost-feminine flourishes that have distinguished the label: a tiny bow on a neckline, another at the waist, kimono-cut shirts, high-waisted khakis, a green coat in what looked like crepe, puff sleeves, shorts in tie silk. (”We turned ties into pants,” Elbaz’s coconspirator Lucas Ossendrijver laughed.) It was typically…glamorous…and, as such, in keeping with the whisper of transgression that has always trailed behind Lanvin menswear. That held true even though, for the first time, the collection actually mixed both of the label’s collections for men, the classic and the more adventurous “garde-robe”—a development reflecting the designers’ conviction that menswear is no longer about “one man in a suit, another in a printed silk T-shirt.”

“I don’t do fashion, I do clothes,” Hermès menswear designer Véronique Nichanian told the French newspaper Libération today. It’s such modesty that makes her collections so seemingly unprepossessing, but, paradoxically, so desirable. The most flattering, straightforward clothes in the best fabrics money can buy: Why make things any more complicated? That’s where Nichanian’s skill as a designer comes into play. Sure, she makes clothes, but she adds just enough fashion to seduce—and reassure. This season’s color palette was dark, earthy shades of taupe, slate, bronze, and a deep greenish shade she called “verdigris,” which Nichanian showed in seersucker as well as calfskin. They were sophisticated hues, but they weren’t scary. (That function was filled by the hit of apple green in a big cashmere pullover or a shirt layered under a bronze leather overshirt.) The designer also adjusted proportions—slightly cropping pants, upping the volume of jackets and knitwear—to emphasize stylish ease. And she showed her dressiest looks—suits in black and bronze linen—with sandals. Maybe that look is a bare necessity in Nichanian’s eyes, but the guy who wears it will be looking mighty fashionable come next summer.

You can feel his enthusiasm on the catwalk, where his models are not just wearing clothes but also toting bags, strapping on watches, sticking pins in their lapels or pens in their pockets, glinting with silver buttons and tie clips and cuff links, all of them filleted out of Dunhill’s spectacular archives. But this is no academic exercise in 2s. They were dazzlers, especially the (literally) cool sunglass frames made from English flint mined from the Thames; the traveling watch box in the same flint; and a gratifyingly weighty ball-point pen lacquered with a mix of meteorite and black diamonds.
