This is an extraordinarily interesting questionsince they are a mixture of many different raceand all these races invaded Britain before the

Romans came during the first century B Cbut there had been at least three invasions before thatThe first of these was by a dark-haired Mediterranean race call the IberiansThe other two were by Celtic tribesfirst the Gaelswhose descendants are the modern Scots and Irishsome of whom still speak the Gaelic languageand secondly the Britonswho gave their name to the whole island of BritainThese were the people whom the Romans conqueredThe Romans gave the Britons a good deal of their civilizationbut they never settled in Britain in very large numbersso the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the barbariansi.e.the numberous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe

There were three great Germanic tribes which invaded Britainthe Angles the Saxons and the Jutesand together they form the basis of the modern English  raceThe Britons as a racedisappeared except in Wales and CornwallMany Welsh people still speak their British’,i.e.Celtictongue which is called Welsh In Cornwall the language has died outthough it can still be recognized in some proper namese.g.that of the author of this bookThe Angles were so numerous that the country was called Angle-landi.e. Englandand the Anglo-Saxon language was Old English in other wordsmodern English has descended directly from it

So far thenwe have noted the Iberianstwo kinds of Celts the Romansand the Germanic peoples which we shall call collectively the Saxonsbut the story is by no means endedA few hundred years later a further invasion took place from the North-Eastthat of the Danesand the whole North-Eastern half of England became for a long time Danish territoryFinallyand even more importantthere came the great Normam invasionThe Normams wereNorth-mem’,and like the Danes had come originally from Scandinavia in the North-Eastbut they had settled in part of Northern Francestill known as Normandyand adopted the French languageIn the year 1066Duke William of Normandy claimed the English throneand after defeating and killing the Saxon king Rarold at the Battle of Hastingshe went on to conquer the whole countryand to merit the name of William the ConquerorHe was crowned William of Englandand our present Queen is one of his descendantsThe Saxons became a subject peopleand all the most important noblemen were NormansEnglish was the language of the common people and Norman French was the language of the aristocracyincluding the King and courtEven today many French expressions occur in traditional ceremonial languageand a few English people feel proud if they can prove that their ancestors were NormansEventuallyhowever the speech of the common people had already absorbed some of it and many everyday expressions

in English have a French origin

There has never been another invasion of Britain in the 900 years since William the Conqueror so that all the various elements have had time to settle down and form one people
